How it works
Most appliances have a common problem. They inefficiently handle inductive load.
Inductive load is anything that runs by an electric motor. In a home these include refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, washing machines, fans, blower motors, pool pumps, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners and various kitchen appliances. In a business there can also be conveyor belts, escalators, lifts, ice machines, beer reticulation equipment, compressors, petrol pumps and all types of mechanical processing.
All motors require a certain amount of reactive power (non-working power) from the electrical supplier to create the Electro-Magnetic-Field (EMF) around the motor to make it work.
Your local supplier delivers that reactive power to your motor without knowing how much you really need. Your motor then uses what is needed and the rest is "lost" - dispersed as heat, either at the motor or through the switches and wiring.
This loss is called I2R loss or 'line loss'.
The problem with this equation is that you have paid for the lost electricity, because it's already travelled through your meter and been measured.
